You’ve heard it. I’ve heard it. We’ve all heard it. That saying we remember hearing at an early age. “When in mixed company, you must not talk about Politics, Sex, and Religion.”
Well I am going to break this rule. Why? Because in many of our life experiences we realize that much of what and who we are as a living being is influenced by who we are governed by, intimate with, and seeking to follow to give meaning to life.
We at times realize how often these principles of life intersect with each other. We at times may think about the politician caught in an adulterous affair, or the preacher who feels led to run for office, or the ultimate: The Preacher who ran for office and got caught in an adulterous affair!
But at the heart of humanity we see these three ‘topics’ are God ordained. It is God who established these institutions.
- Government – Romans 13:1 Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God.
- Family– Genesis 1:26-28 Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.”
So God created man in his own image,
in the image of God he created him;
male and female he created them.
And God blessed them. And God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it, and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth.”
- Religion – Matthew 16:13-19 Now when Jesus came into the district of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, “Who do people say that the Son of Man is?” And they said, “Some say John the Baptist, others say Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.” He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” Simon Peter replied, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” And Jesus answered him, “Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah! For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven. And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.”
So we see Government instituted by God to maintain social order for the glory of God, the Family instituted to propagate the human race through sexual intimacy and reflect the image of the triune God back to Him thereby revealing to all of creation His glory, and finally the establishment of the Church, the Body of Christ on earth, the recipients of the most gracious, loving act of redemption creation has ever seen.
No wonder the Devil tells us to be quiet.
