Obama, Romney…Liberalism, Conservatism…Democrat, Republican…Pro-Choice, Pro-Life…Big Government, Small Government…Small Military, Huge Military…Keynesian Economics, Capitalism…Pro-Union, Pro-Business…you get the idea. There could NOT be any more stark difference in choices this election. Many have voice their choice in the polls…47% to 47% (+/- 2).
So that leads me to a very interesting question. Who are these 4-6 percent called “The Undecided”? Better yet, what make up of mindset does one have to actually have to NOT be able to form a choice? How many Liberal, Pro-Life, Big Government, Huge Military, Pro-Business, Keynesian Economic Republicans can there be?
How does one sit on the fence? A fence so thin a blade of grass would teeter to one side or the other? This makes no sense! Well to me anyway…until recently. I listen to Red Eye Radio sometimes during my middle of the night travels. Eric and Gary tell it like it is. And while they are conservative, their leanings are Libertarian and not automatically Republican…like mine. So Eric is interviewing a psychologist the other night after the debate. They were discussing the display of emotions in Obama and Romney’s performance and how that translates to firing up their supporters.
But I couldn’t help think about how their performance translates to those who haven’t made up their mind. You see, for me…and maybe you…I look at what a candidate SAYS and match it up with my worldview to see if that candidate is fitting in with how I interpret the world. So when I judge a candidate, it is on his POSITIONS and POLICY beliefs that steer me. And I understand that no one candidate will fulfill all my positions, but I pick the one that comes the closest. Some of those positions are weighted, such as Abortion weighs more than Military.
But do you know that there are people out there that don’t look at policy and positions? Big Debt/No Debt, Big Milt/Little Milt, Keynesian/Capitalism…they don’t care! They can take it or leave it. Cause either way, they will just….be. They will exist. No matter what happens or how this country is run. It is THOSE people that the candidates spend all their time, money, and energy trying to win them over. The ones that don’t care what the candidates believe.
So what DO they care about? Check this out. This is what I found. Ready for it? Here it comes….Likability. Yep that’s right. It all comes down to whether they “like” a candidate. So that begs the question: “What constitutes a “like”? Oh, get this….Cuteness. Smile. Nice hair. Using a certain word that resonates with the would be potential voter…like “underwear” (ala Clinton’s Boxers or Briefs question). The suit. Or…the Speedo. So as they debate the weight of the world issues of our day, it all comes down to, “Hey! He likes Jelly Beans – I like Jelly Beans – Looks like I’m voting for him!”
So when it’s all said and done, hundreds of millions are spent, thousands of volunteers walk, make calls, stuff envelopes, print flyers, etc…our President will be chosen by the most important people in an election, on the opinion of someone whose most important opinion hinges on the topic of candy, hair, music style or clothing. The Likeability Factor.
Here’s the kicker….that 4-6% is least likely to care enough to remember to actually make it to the polls on election day. Thank God.
