We Need To Get Back To…?

Backwards….Forwards. That is today’s debate. The Democrats accuse the Republicans of wanting to take this country ‘back’ in time to a period of failed policies. While on the other hand they say ‘forward’ is the way to go. But forward to what? The looming cliff? But one thing is for sure, staying right where we are is a bad idea. Consider the “status” of affairs, no pun intended, while looking at the “headlines” listed on Drudge Report as I write this:

‘He should have been here a long time ago’…(Sandy victims say to Obama)
‘SURPRISE: Highest number of new jobless claims — OH, PA…’ (Exit polls showed many believed the economy was coming back)
‘WIRE: Mistress Had Substantial Classified Data…’ (Scandal)
‘Broadwell Could Face Charges…’ (Scandal)
‘Agent Shirtless Revealed…’ (Scandal)
‘Orders review of commanders’ behavior…’ (Scandal)
‘Benghazi inquiry sparks Hill turf battle…’ (Scandal)
‘Latino Poverty Rate Climbs to 28%…’ (Indicative of our financial state)
‘DENNY’S to charge 5% ‘Obamacare surcharge’ and cut employee hours…’ (Indicative of our financial state)
‘TEXAS INSTRUMENTS Cuts 5% of Workforce…’ (Indicative of our financial state)
‘U.S. Postal Service Loses Record $15.9 Billion…’ (Indicative of our financial state)

We are a mess.

I do know that if the man in charge of the White house had the name, “George W. Bush”, he would have been drawn and quartered by now. But partisan politics aside, what do we do? Some say we need to push full steam ahead, that the policies in place just need more time. Some say we need to get back to Capitalism. Some say back to the Constitution. Still others say back to the basics of a Republic…those ideals that the Founders had for securing individual freedom.

U.S. Congressman Ron Paul’s farewell speech pointed out some interesting observations about freedom and liberty that I hope you take a look at. Rush Limbaugh discussed this on his show today and agreed with Rep. Paul, but added that the key is that this is not a political problem, or an economic/Capitalism problem, but rather an education problem. An education problem that has affected our culture in such a way that what was once cherished and held in high regard as being the definition of freedom, is now something completely different to these younger generations. Please take the time to read the transcript of his comments. He is on to something.

But I think he has stopped short of the true answer. The true direction. The true “going back to.” When we talk about culture, what we really are stating is a core set of beliefs that govern and operate our communal relationships with one another. This will ultimately have a society’s morals as its root. What a society believes morally will be reflected in its culture.

But we can’t just stop at morality. At least not in America. In Muslim countries they have a “morality”. It includes some of the worse abuses of women known on this planet. In China they have a “morality”. This includes a husband and a wife killing their children in the womb until they get the desired gender of child, since they are only allowed one child. No, America’s morality has its roots in Christianity.

But still this is not enough. Even if we pass laws, all the laws we can, that reflect Judeo/Christian morality, all we would be left with is a righteousness unto oneself. That’s what the Pharisees had! Still not good enough.

As I read through the prophet Jeremiah this month, one thing stands out clear. God is not calling the Jews to repent. He is not calling them to a renewed morality. He is done giving them time. He had given them ample warning and now His wrath would not be withheld.

Jeremiah 13:8-14
8 Then the word of the Lord came to me: 9 “Thus says the Lord: Even so will I spoil the pride of Judah and the great pride of Jerusalem. 10 This evil people, who refuse to hear my words, who stubbornly follow their own heart and have gone after other gods to serve them and worship them, shall be like this loincloth, which is good for nothing. 11 For as the loincloth clings to the waist of a man, so I made the whole house of Israel and the whole house of Judah cling to me, declares the Lord, that they might be for me a people, a name, a praise, and a glory, but they would not listen.
12 “You shall speak to them this word: ‘Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel, “Every jar shall be filled with wine.”’ And they will say to you, ‘Do we not indeed know that every jar will be filled with wine?’ 13 Then you shall say to them, ‘Thus says the Lord: Behold, I will fill with drunkenness all the inhabitants of this land: the kings who sit on David’s throne, the priests, the prophets, and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem. 14 And I will dash them one against another, fathers and sons together, declares the Lord. I will not pity or spare or have compassion, that I should not destroy them.’”

God is still giving us warnings. You see them in the headlines above. But He does not want us to come back to the Constitution. Or to the Founder’s ideology. Or to a renewed morality. God is calling us back to….Him. He is calling us to Jesus. To the cross, where we can lay down our personal sins, and in doing so, find Him again in our nation.

Rush is on to something. Education is where I think we really started to turn away. In the late 1800’s, there was a man by the name of Dr. A.A. Hodge. He was one of our Puritan fathers of the faith. Consider his quote in regards to the start of a secular school system in the late 1800’s:

“I am as sure as I am of the fact of Christ’s reign that a comprehensive and centralized system of national education separated from religion, as is now commonly proposed, will prove the most appalling enginery for the propagation of anti-Christian and atheistic unbelief, and of anti-social, nihilistic ethics, individual, social, and political, which this sin-rent world has ever seen.” Dr. A.A. Hodge

Please take the time to read a full transcript. Some key points of the Church’s role in the debate at that time are revealed.

Dr. A.A. Hodge – Engine of Atheism

Time to wake up America. Judgment is at hand. Repent while there is still time, and turn your heart to Jesus.

  1. I really would like to sit down with our Illinois senators Mark Kirk and Dick Durbin and ask them to respond to this. I would make them answer each “why” and wouldn’t allow either to give me a spin answer. Thanks for this posting.
